For Leaders, in the world of business, authenticity is a quality that can often be overlooked, undervalued, or even misunderstood. But for small business owners and large corporation leaders, authentic leadership is a beacon of inspiration that can guide their journey toward success. Authentic leaders understand that the key to greatness lies in embracing their true selves, harnessing their strengths, and managing their weaknesses. This short article will explore how the pursuit of authenticity can transform your leadership style, whether running a small enterprise, franchise or managing a conglomerate. I call these the Four Pillers of Authentic Leadership.
Know Thyself:
The foundation of authentic leadership is self-awareness. Before you can lead others effectively, you must first lead yourself. Take the time to introspect, and discover your values, passions, and purpose. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, for it is in this self-awareness that your leadership journey truly begins. Study, work on and fully understand your strengths and weaknesses in emotional intelligence.
For small business owners, this self-discovery can be a powerful tool. It allows you to align your business with your values and create a unique selling proposition that resonates with your target audience. For larger business owners or corporate executives, self-awareness can lead to a more transparent and approachable corporate culture, enhancing employee engagement and customer loyalty.
Embrace Your Authenticity:
Once you clearly understand who you are, it’s time to embrace your authenticity. Authentic leaders don’t try to mimic the success of others; they chart their own course based on their genuine selves. Whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, risk-taker, or cautious planner, your authenticity is your superpower.
Small business owners can use their authenticity to connect with their customers on a personal level. Authenticity builds trust, and trust is the foundation of lasting customer relationships. For larger corporations, embracing authenticity can humanize the brand and make it more relatable to the public, helping to foster a positive company image.
Leash Your Limitations:
Authentic leaders understand that even their genuine selves have flaws, weaknesses, and tendencies that can hinder their success. They don’t ignore these aspects but learn to manage them effectively. Keeping your limitations on a leash is essential – acknowledging their presence but not letting them dictate your actions. In my coaching career, I have found that this is one of the skills leaders do not like to work on much less visit. I suggest and even implore you to be honest with yourself and work on understanding your limitations and embracing them for what they are, another aspect of your personality that makes you, YOU!
For small business owners, this might mean seeking out partners or team members who complement your weaknesses. In larger businesses, it involves fostering a culture of continuous improvement and providing opportunities for employees to develop and grow in their roles.
Do not be afraid to ask your subordinates, or the leaders above you to give you feedback in this area. You will find you learn a lot and you will gain respect from those around you. Try to work with a Coach or someone you respect and trust to find the best ways to “Leash Your Limitations.”
Bring Out the Best in Yourself:
Being authentic doesn’t mean being stagnant. Authentic leaders continuously strive to bring out the best version of themselves. They work on their strengths, refine weaknesses, and adapt to changing circumstances. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Always push yourself to your own personal limits. After all, you learn twice as much from mistakes as you do from working in your safe zone. This commitment to personal growth benefits the leader and the entire organization.
Business owners can leverage their personal growth to drive innovation and adaptability. Leaders who continuously develop themselves are role models, inspiring their teams to embrace growth and change.
In conclusion, pursuing authentic leadership, remember this fundamental truth: Be yourself, but make choices that bring out the best version of yourself. Authentic leaders, whether at the helm of a small business or a large corporation, find success by staying true to their values, embracing their uniqueness, and managing their limitations. So, as you navigate the challenging waters of entrepreneurship or corporate leadership, let authenticity be your guiding light. You have within you the power to inspire, transform, and excel.
